Well here we are finally! We've been here a week already and I can't say it doesn't feel like it. India has so far been everything we expected... and more. Our senses have well and truly been assaulted by everything we've seen, heard and most definitely smelt and we are well and truly knackered by the whole experience although still very happy to be here. I definitely know now exactly what it feels like to have severe culture shock, everything is just absolutely crayzee here, it's totally nuts. The people on the streets are generally out for everything they can get from you and they'll do or say anything to make you part with your cash. Depending on what kind of mood this can all seem mildly amusing or just totally irritating, you definitely have to keep your guard up at all times although we are getting better at haggling our way into rickshaws now. The first couple of days when we arrived in Delhi, we basically just had to keep walking forward whilst avoiding all manner of beggars, touts, cows, goats, autorickshaws to name but a few just to get out of the front door! It's kinda funny at first but after a week of being in Indian cities we are definitely ready to move away from the big smoke (and it really is big smoke-you can barely breathe!). As for the heat it has definitely become unbearable now so we are gonna head northwards to a cooler town in the hills called Shimla where hopefully we can actually step outside without sweating buckets. We have chosen to travel by coach tonight, mainly because the train stations are a pretty grim affair here, so grim in fact that a monkey pissed on Jammy's head while we were waiting for a train! Now that WAS funny. Out of the million and one indians in that station, that monkey chose Jammy-he really is special! We have decided against the idea of travelling south now because we won’t be able to stand the heat so we are just gonna wait and see how long we will stay here. Since we arrived in India we have spent a couple of days in Delhi, just generally getting used to the funny Indian way, then headed to Agra, home of the Taj Mahal ( which was amazing) before moving across to Jaipur. This so called 'Golden Triangle' is really a collection of 3 mad-busy cities and because of the immense heat we haven't been able to do as much as we would have liked. Delhi is probably the most interesting because of the sheer amount that's going on around you, although the Taj Mahal in Agra was definitely worth seeing despite the heat. We totally loved seeing it at sunset when our rickshaw driver took us round the back of of it (despite being stood on a dried up manky river1) On the food front, it's generally pretty tasty although veg curry morning, noon and night does make pizza hut seem a little too tempting. (OK we admit it, we caved in just once!) But on the old Delhi Belly side of things we are doing okay-ish which i’m sure some of you will be very glad to hear! But having heard a couple of fellow travellers’ nasty tales we are sadly both developing a weird OCD and just can't get enough of the old hygiene gel! The rooms we have stayed in have been a bit of a mixed bag and standards have ranged from pretty good to downright grim, although they will undoubtedly get worse and we will long for the days when we were provided with a bucket to flush the toilet! Right I’m gonna stop going on now cos there is absolutely no way I could write about everything, it’s just too goddamn mental! I reckon you have to see how busy it is here for yourself to fully understand it, there are absolutely no rules on the road except for the fact that smaller vehicles, (be that a goat, a cow, a motorbike, a camel) move out of the way for larger ones. Crossing the road brings a whole new dimension to playing chicken! As for the poverty it can be pretty depressing but I hate the fact that you can be so detached from it even though you’re amongst it. We will hopefully be putting some photos on the tinternet shortly but for now just imagine us in the hottest, busiest, most polluted, most disordered and random city on earth-but with big grins on our faces!
