The drive into Melbourne was a real jolt to the system after travelling along the coastal road, all of a sudden there were multi lane highways, two different sets of toll roads and a confusing array of signs. This inevitably meant with Bee navigating that we missed our turning for the motorway and had to take an alternative route, though we were just about managing without the aid of SatNav for any of our driving both here and in New Zealand (though Bee's blood pressure would have been much lower in the cities with it!)

We had found a campsite just 9 km north of the city centre, from there we managed to ride the tram No. 112 all the way out to St. Kilda in the south. Passing through the artistic area of Fitzroy and down Brunswick Street were it would have been dangerous to the wallet to alight the tram , with all its cool cafes, bars and funky little boutique shops. We chose to ride on through the city to the beach!

After missing out on going to Luna Park in Sydney, Tim was really excited at the chance to go to the one in St. Kilda, unfortunately due winter it was all closed up until the weekend, though it did still have an eerie charm as we walked around outside it. Back at the campsite we did a true Aussie style dinner of barbecued lamb cooked on the ubiquitous "Barbie", available at any park, campsite or beach area in Australia.

Having done a few great "free" walking tours for tips in South America, we joined a simlar one for Melbourne where we set off from the Library, through China Town, taking in lots of alley ways of street art. Tim was nearly not to be seen again, his love of taking pictures of graffiti meant he often had to be dragged on to continue the tour! We ended the tour crossing over the river to get a great view of the city skyline as the sun was going down.

We watched as the twinkling lights in all the buildings were going on, illuminating the view. There was just enough time to catch a quick drink in a rooftop bar over looking the city spires before heading to the Regent Theatre to see King Kong. All the posters said prepare to be amazed, and we truly were! It was a fantastic performance with phenomenal animatronics and a sound track by Justice and The Avalanches.
