We arrived in town at 8am having stopped at something like 4 in the morning for a short break. Most rooms weren't ready but as 2 were, the bags went in one and Simone in another. I went for a walk to explore the city which was beautiful but they were all now merging into one with Puebla, Oaxaca and San Cristobal all great but similar in terms of colonial charm and open squares with cathedrals. Saying that the one at San Cristobal was a bit gaudy looking (it was a kind of orange colour!) compared to the others.
The weather was really cloudy in the morning but it was bright again in the afternoon. It had been like this a couple of times in Oaxaca as well but here it seemed colder and greyer. Outside our hotel, again in a good location near the main square, we watched a procession with people dressed as Romans leading Jesus carrying a cross and getting whipped. They were heading into the main square and were followed by a fairly big crowd.
In the afternoon most of us minus Simone, old Doris and her pal, went to this random little mayan town called San Juan Chulula. It was a bit intimidating at first as it was Good Friday and was full of locals in their traditional dress (although pleasently enough because that is just how they dress and not for the benefit of the hand full of tourists that visit the town). This was a dirty, more typical, Mexican town complete with stray dogs feeding on mounds of rubbish, live chickens for sale and locals pissed up on tequila and fighting!! Saying that it was well worth seeing. We also visited a small museum in the village which showed it just over 50 years ago as nothing more than a church.
That evening the whole group was heading out for food but with Simone feeling ill we just grabbed some soup and tacos and had an early night.
