We flew to Adelaide, hired a car and drove to Tanunda in the Barossa Valley where we stayed for 2 nights. The Barossa is one of Australia's major wine producing regions. It's full of vineyards and wineries, some of which we recognised but many we'd never heard of! Very similar to the Margaret River region in Western Australia.
On our full day in the Barossa Valley (3 March), we did a circular drive south west through Rowland Flat and Lyndoch to Cockatoo Valley, then south east to Springton where we stopped briefly at the SCG ( Sprinton Cricket Ground!).
From there, we turned north to Eden Valley and stopped at the Eden Valley Lookout with its information plaques and large cross overlooking the valley and then onto Angaston where we stopped for over an hour. We walked along one side of the main street, turned off to look at the impressive Town Hall and Lutheran Church, and then along the other side of the main street. Angaston is a pretty town with some lovely old buildings and lots of roses in planters and gardens.
We then drove to the Mengler's Hill Lookout and Sculpture Park. The latter was very disappointing (compared to Cottesloe's Sculpture by the Sea) and the former was no better than the Eden Valley lookout.
We drove back to Tanunda and walked down one side of the main street and back up the other side. Tanunda also has some lovely old buildings but it wasn't as nice as Angaston. We deviated off the main road to Goat Square which has 3 historic stone cottages (ie 1842!) and was built as a meeting and market place. It was very picturesque.
