After our first night without Vicky and Dave we got on a bus bound for the Cameron Highlands. This is a jungle far up in the mountains of Malaysia and a climate more like home. Many of the British, who moved to Malaysia during the expansion of ‘The Empire’, settled here because of its cool climate and the amazing scenery. When we arrived we were greeted by typical British weather: rain!

Our guest house was an old colonial building, built on a hill overlooking the nearby town of Tanah Rata. That evening we sat down to dinner wrapped up in all our clothes, as the temperature was a lot colder than we had experienced elsewhere on this trip. After a lovely home cooked English meal, we began to plan our jungle trek for the next day. After our previous jungle treks up in Chang Mai, Thailand, we were looking for something a little less full on, especially as the rain had made even the easy treks quite dangerous.

So we settled on trail number 9, which started near some waterfalls called Robinson Falls. To find the starting point we had to walk through the town and up to a hospital. The trail notes said ‘look for the metal entrance gate and turn right to the falls’ – of course we got to the hospital and traipsed around for about 30 minutes without finding any remotely metal looking gates. In the end we asked and a lady kindly walked us down to the start! (Where there were no metal gates in sight!) We were beginning to think our easy trek may not be so easy, if we couldn’t even find the starting point!

Due to the recent rain, the paths had been left very slippery and slimy so instead of striding along we tended to shuffle! We both slipped onto our bottoms several times! The waterfalls were pretty non-descript really, so we carried on along the trackk and into the jungle. The canopy above our heads was bright green and alive with the sounds of birds. At times water cascaded over the track, that was also littered with fallen trees that we had to either shimmy under or climb across, but all in all the walk was pretty level and not too exhausting. In total, including the 30 minutes we wasted trying to locate the trail, it took us about 3 hours.

There was lots more trails and things to do and see in the Cameron Highlands, but due to our limited time we only managed to do one trek, before we had to head back to Kuala Lumpur and on to Borneo.
