Sorry...couldn't resist Mel Brooks' "History of the World" comedy hook. Jen and I start the day with a jog. I take her through the Getsamani neighborhood I've run each morning. The humidity really gets to her at 7 a.m. and we walk much of the way back. We get back, take a dip in the pool and Katie/Jen/I walk to the Juan Valdez Cafe. Generation gap ...the girls don't know who Juan Valdez is and ask if this is Starbucks Colombia. A few pastries and coffee drinks ( Jen doesn't like the Colombian "tinto" which is dark bitter roast...not much body), order for Lyn & Ash, and we hit a pharmacy for some sulfa pills to cover our bets on water/food illness.
Katie still not feeling well and we have a photographer I hired (Sr. Juan Diego Duque ) coming later today to take her Senior pictures, so she's staying at the SC to do her nails and rest.
Lyn, Jen, Ash, and I go to the Museo de Inquisicion near Plaza Bolivar. We were there evening before when we toured the Cathedral of Cartagena but not enough time. Turns out it is a very small museo and like other Cartagena attractions for your $10-15 admission, about 30 minutes worth. There are two small rooms w/ medieval torture implements and a history of the Spanish Inquisition which held its own sordid history of witch executions and citizen torture here in Cartagena in this building/grounds. A courtyard w/ gallow and guillotine, a small dungeon Upstairs the history of Cartagena (Kalamery by the Indians) is good. Few signs in English, so the girls/I read outloud our translations of exhibits to Lyn.
The girls are lured into a number of Emerald Joyerias. There is a jewelry shop every block and the desparate sales pitch ensues. I caution the girls that we aren't gemologists and we ought to do research even if the $20-$50 price tag on small emerald rings is legit. Lyn looks at a few finer pieces ( thinking 20th anniversary gift? ) and the prices are cut in half as we head for the doors.
On way back to Santa Clara...we are within a block and stop at the Wok & Wrap. Earlier we had walked by and the smell was so good...dropped in to meet the proprieter and his wife. He in a chef's uniform w/ clogs, she a pretty petite hostess. Very clean, orderly, and modest cafe you would have missed if not for the clever large steel wok hanging over the entrance w/ hot-torch welding carved out name like a pumpkin. The menu is Asian style salads, noodle, rice dishes with a very creative series of wraps. We order Asian vegetables & chicken wraps, stir fry noodles - Curry, and Chicken-Eggplant wraps. Either we are starving or this could be the best tasting thing we've eaten all week ! This Wok & Wrap is a hidden gem and the owners are friendly. I have scanned TripAdvisor for restaurants and didn't find this one. Hope we get this onto a list online for them. I'll take a picture and post the address shortly.
