Woke up at around 9, showered, and packed all my gear. Went down for breakfast and checked out. Made my way down to Central Station to catch a train to the airport for my 1240 flight to Lisbon.
3 hour flight later and arrived into a much warmer Lisbon, around 28 degrees. Headed for the Aerobus which took me into the town centre.
Directions to the hostel told me to walk through the big arch and then it was the first street on the left, after getting off the bus I didn't see no big arch. This has to be the worst part of the trip at every destination - arriving in a new non-English speaking city, lost, lugging around an 18 kilo backpack in 30 degree weather, ugh. After walking around aimlessly for about 10 minutes I stumble across the square and the big arch at the waterfront. Arrived at Yes Hostel at around 430.
First hostel/shared accommodation experience. Checked into the hostel and made my way to the 6 bed dorm on level 2. Doesnt look like anyone else is checked in yet. Dumped my luggage in the locker and made my way back downstairs. Put my name down for the hostel dinner which is served at 9pm each night and the pub crawl which starts at 11.45pm. Having a few hours to kill I made out and explored a little bit of Lisbon by foot.
First thing noticed while walking around Lisbon, is how hilly the place is! So hilly in fact it has a few elovators around the city that you can use with the tram/bus metro ticket, to get to the higher or lower levels of the city.
Made my way back to the hostel and watched the last half of the Germany vs Greece game in the common area before dinner started.
Dinner was sensational, and for 10 euro it was very good value. 3 course Portuguese meal cooked by the hostel, including soup, a chicken and rice dish, some sort of cake dessert and 4 beers, wine or sangria.
Met a few other lone travelers, Marcus from Perth, Tim from Melbourne, Nicole a Vancouver born Costa Rican, and a Colombian girl of which I forgot her name.
11.30pm and the bell rang at the bar for everyone to come up and have a shot. Manu jumps on the bar, does a little spill welcoming the new guests and salutes. The pubcrawl was 10 euro which included all you can drink at the first bar, two drinks at the second and entry into the last place which was a club. Lisbon by night is fantastic! People filled all over the little narrow cobble stone streets in the bar district, can barely move. Left the club at about 330 and made our way back to the hostel.
