Luckily, we crossed the Straight of Magellan on a calm day because we had heard stories of people being stranded for many hours at a time waiting for either the winds or the waves to abate. Our crossing was very nice and I enjoyed riding at the bow even though it was a little cold. After the crossing, we continued for another 12 hours before we arrived in Ushuaia (the Southern-most city in the world). The city was originally founded as a penal colony, which would have been a tortuous place in the winter time because it is still pretty cold during the summer. Eventually, it became a port town and for ships trying to find passage through the Straight of Magellan by way of the Beagle Channel or trying to find refuge from rounding the Cape Horn. The channel was named this after the voyage of Charles Darwin aboard the HMS Beagle on his world renowned exploration of South America and the Galapagos Islands. However, it is ironic that they named anything after his voyage because Darwin considered the people of this area, the Fuegians, to be less than human. The entire area is actually all islands with magnificent snow-capped peaks that resemble the Swiss Alps. The channel connects both the Atlantic and the PacificOceans and is the South American gateway to Antarctica. The smaller islands that lie within the area provide habitats for thousands of sea lions, cormorants, and penguins. Also, a few minutes outside of Ushuaia lies the Tierra del FuegoNational Park. Being in the hiking mood, we decided to tackle a few of these peaks, which was fun because there are small mountain glaciers at the top that are soft enough and slick enough to try to ski down without ski's.Along with the small glaciers, there are also enormous glaciers that rest in the mountain-top valleys, where we were able to strap on some crampons (spikes that attach to the bottom of your shoes to keep you from slipping) and do a little ice climbing. For those that love the outdoors, Patagonia is definitely a must both for its grandeur and its variety of adventure. Also, for those wondering, if you book a tour to Antarctica once you arrive in Ushuaia, it will cost you about $5000 per person. We, obviously, did not get that opportunity, but we heard it was fascinating. From here we will fly to the romantic and glamorous city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. This city is well-known for being the home of the tango, having beautiful people, and also likening more to a city in Europe than to South America. Till then, Cheers.
