Hong Kong 20th February 2009
So I will quickly finish off Hong Kong before we start Vietnam, during our last day we just bummed around going back to the places we liked and we took a harbor tour on Star ferries which is how most of the locals go between islands it was nice and relaxing, I fell asleep a little bit!
In the evening I really wanted duck in pancakes because I had seen them in a leaflet we had but we couldn't find it anywhere so we settled on a different place and had some duck there unfortunately it was not very good and still had loads of bones which is hard to eat with chopsticks! Mattie was not impressed and sulked for a while until I bought him some crazy sweet rice cakes and ice-cream! I am not at all impressed with the food in Hong Kong and hope that Vietnam will be better.
On the Saturday morning we got up and checked out of the hostel in Hong Kong, we were walking off when the guy ran after us with a card "in case you ever come back!"
NOT LIKELY!
Then we got the bus back to the airport, checked in and all that, of course we had some HK dollars left so Mattie thought we should spend them in this crazy sweet shop, naturally they were all rotten and he ended up spitting most of them out!
The flight was also crazy before we even took off a lady had a seizure coz there was flashing lights on the plane so that delayed us, then the plane had engine problems so we were delayed again, during this time there was a lot of scary sounds coming from the plane and we both wondered if we would ever get to Vietnam in one piece, we did though but the scary sounds continued for some time.
When we got to Vietnam we took a taxi to the hotel, possibly the strangest car journey we've ever taken, it was raining and we were driving for about 20 minutes, I couldn't see out of the windscreen so I don't know how the driver could, then he puts his hazards on and pulls over onto the side of the road and we're both thinking oh s**t he's going to start negotiating the price of the fare!!!!
Turns out he just wants to turn the wipers on and can't do it whilst driving apparently! Also driving here is a real experience in itself, the rules are, use your horn A LOT and don't hit anyone, apart from that anything goes, driving on the other side of the road, overtaking on bends all ok.
Anyway we got to the hotel in one piece but they were full, luckily they have another one which was just around the corner literally so we stayed there and for the same price as the scabby hostel in Hong Kong! The room was really nice but as we got there late coz of the delayed flight we decided to go to bed and explore in the morning so we fell asleep to the sound of horns and decided the horn was invented specifically for the Vietnamese!
