breakfast in Lima, lunch in Bogota, dinner in Curacao..three countries in one day....
We woke at 3am...there was a time when this was going to bed time...whats happened??....suitably knackered and not awake we hopped into ou waiting taxi that as usual was held together by a piece of rope and the hopes of the driver. We set off through Lima unhindered by traffic passing people pouring out of clubs as we made our way to the airport.
Looking on the bright side we said that at least leaving at this time meant the airport would be quiet.....mmm it seems most flights out of Lima that morning were going early and we joined our large queue and waited patiently..to cut a long story short we then queued in various queues for nearly 3 hrs only making the flight at the last minute because the stringent head of security after looking at the queues had a rather heated conversation with his passport staff and then waived everyone through...hilarious really...everyone just bombed straight pass these guys in their booths and charged the x-ray machine people.. Hayley during this queuing period had begun to let the early starts and stupid officials get to her and decided to lose the plot a little...later revealingn that it was the more urgent need for the toilet and the lack of an end to the queue that was mainly responsible for her tantrum.. Anyway we made it and said goodbye to Peru, both very sad to be doing so.
Peru is a fabolous country with great people with more variety than one could imagine. It had seemed a long time having a month there when we began but as we left it seemed to have flown by and everyone who has a possibility of going really should to experience Peru for themselves.
We slept a little and arrived into Bogota, Columbia with the prospect of 7hrs in transit..we ummed and arred about what to do, both of us were keen to go out and head into Bogota to at least say`we've been to Columbia but at the same time were slightly concerned for our safety..
Not surprisingly the former won out and we headed through passport control and into Columbia..given our concerns it was a little amusing to have 1 passport control guy oogling a centre fold and showing it to his mate..who then told us that Colombian women were great....this place may not be too bad i thought.
Anyway we decided to sort out onward ticket to Curacao out with Avianca before we headed into Bogota. To cut a long story short no one in Columbia spoek english and despite Hayley doing brilliantly with her Spanish she seemed to be finding it impossible for Avianca staff to understand what we were doing..again tiredness played a large part but Avianca were treated to some pretty hilarious behaviour. Now looking back perhaps emotions were running too high but we did see tears....
Heading into downtown Bogota we immediately felt like heading back into downtown airport..riot police touting rather large automatic rifles greeted us with an atmosphere best described as dodgy.. a couple of photos and a rest stop in a lovely church and we were off back to the airport.
A lovely spot of food and a beer followed before we got on our last flight of the day to Curacao. Arriving back into the Caribbean was a lovely feeling - getting a taxi driven by a women who had seemingly just got off a flight herself given her total lack of road knowledge was not a lovely feeling.
An hr later she had driven us into a gangs drug deal, gone round and round in circles and got us totally pissed off..at the end of our tethers we finally arrived at the hotel - a cold beer and a lovely steak dinner rounded off the most mental days travelling of the trip - 3 countries in 1 day takes some doing - we did it.
