Andy and Matt's Great Escape.
OK, so this is Fraser Island part 2.
We awoke from our slumber a little later than had been previously hoped but never the less we had a whole day ahead of us to check out what the island really had to offer. Our first port of call was Indian Head, a large rocky part of the island high up and sticking out slightly giving some pretty impressive views. We arrived after a slightly hairy drive through the soft sands of the beach (a number of times seeming as if the whole car was going to topple onto its side), and we were't disappointed by what we saw. Infront of us their was a group of dolphins jumping about in the water, a little further out we could see a humpback whale surfacing occasionally, down below where we sat a couple of turtles swam about, to our right there was a couple of manta rays riding the waves, and finally as if that was not enough a few eagles flew around us making dives into the water to catch there lunch. All chuffed with what we had seen we began the decent to the car and took off to a place known as Champagne Falls, these been 2 rocks pools where waves splash over and generally into your face as you atempt to relax. These were not quite as impressive as we had hoped however, the weather had taken a slight turn for the worse and the water was a little chilly at the best of times. Having said that it was nice to be out of the car for a while a we were certainly all in need of a wash. After a bit of a drive we went looking for another campsite, this time preferably with less spiders. Once a good spot was located camp was set up and the food and beer was out again. Again the night seemed to drift by quite slowly, a few drinking games were played and another couple of hands of poker dealt out. The highight of the night for all of us though had to be our first sighting of the local Dingos. We had been warned about these creatures before we left mainland Oz and had been told to keep our distance but this had only made us more intent on finding them. Having not even come close to seeing one the first night, Craig spread a little brine from the tuna we had had for dinner around the camp. It worked a treat and it wasn't long before a number of the dog-like animals were checking us out.
The next day was to be our last on the Island and we had a ferry to catch at 4 that afternoon, so on the advice of Mike who had been to Fraser once before, we went straight towards Lake McKenzie. This was by far the most beautiful spot on the Island, the beach was perfect and the water crystal clear. We spent the whole day swimming, playing frisbee and generally exploring the beaches. It was the perfect, relaxing end to the trip.
That night back in Hervey Bay we took up the chance of all-you-can-eat pizza once again, having only eaten cornflakes and biscuit earlier in the day. We all played a little pool in the hostel and a few of the guys headed out to check out some of the bars again. We were to leave the next day so we said our goodbyes that night and we agreed we'd have to meet up with some of the lads at the next major stop, Airlie Beach.
