Our hotel is on the edge of Chinatown so had a wander around the market this morning. It's just like in China, funnily enough - one section selling clothes, one bit for stationery, rows of stalls with identical shoes (wholesale only). Stalls piled with crabs, shrimps, cuttlefish &unidentifiable seafood. Many warehouses selling polypropylene sacks, others with jute sacks, hemp rope, polypropylene rope... And sugar. Vast white sacks of sugar being loaded into pickups at the kerb. Others crammed full of plastic baskets & buckets in all sizes. Considering the sheer amount of 'stuff' the city is very clean. There are stiff fines for littering but few bins, and a lot of this plastic finds its way into the river. We've seen litter sweeping boats and there are a lot of fish (tourists buy fish food, the locals catch fish: a good business model) so it can't be all that polluted.
This afternoon was Culcher, a traditional masked dance telling the story of Hanuman pledging allegiance to Rama. See, I was paying attention to the subtitles. We then went in a 3 storey mall, just like we remember in Shanghai, to avoid the heat. Jam packed with retail outlets selling the same stuff as the street stalls but with air-con.
This is our last night in LoyLaLong hotel & I'd recommend it to anyone coming to Bangkok. Only 8 rooms, lovely staff, the vibe of a hostel but with an excellent kitchen.
