We're now in a pretty little town, the capital of the peninsula of the same name. Founded when a Royal Navy ship of this name came to buy spars made from the local Kauri trees. There is beautiful countryside with dairy farms in between steep hills remininiscent of Devon. Several public slips are surrounded by boats, from inflatables smaller than ours up to big fishing boats, and they all launch in to the Bay of Plenty. Mussel and shellfish are farmed in the bay and made a tasty chowder for lunch. Our little cabin is 5mins walk from the town, which has been made to look as though it's 1872. The facades don't quite conceal the metal clad sides ofthe oldeworlde shops though. A walk up into the hills gave us a fabulous view over sparkling turquoise sea with many volcanic islands popping up. Tree ferns and the ancient Kauri trees made me expect a Jurassic Park dinosaur any moment.
