We stayed at Frejus and drove down the coast road to Sainte Maxime, from where we took the ferry across to San Tropez, with a tourist trip past the villas of the rich and once-famous. The bay really is stunning, and now I understand why artists (Matisse was the only one I'd heard of) lived here. There is a luminous quality to the air which enhances colour. The buildings are painted in ice-cream colours, it's all very picturesque but you'll be glad to note that I don't upload all the photos we take. There were many artists selling their paintings on the quayside, and the streets were packed with French tourists - it must be school holiday time here.
Andy loved the boats, I won't put all his photos in the album! There were huge sleek yachts being refitted, catamarans and ribs, cruisers with garages for their jetbikes....and boutiques with price tags to match the boats. Over a thousand euros for a gaudy sequinned dress, Ice cream at €3 a scoop, I was too mean to buy it! I wonder how ordainary folk afford to live here.
As we left San Tropez, a huge raincloud was rolling in from the west, giving a purple sky as a warning. A 4 masted sailing cruiser had just arrived and was lowering a boat to go ashore. She was the Wind Star, carrying 148 guests and 90 crew. Christine - your next cruise?
When you look at the photos, you might notice one of Andy on a seawall with his lunch. There is also a Spanish paint pot, which contains some plant cuttings from Spain. Generally they stay in the car, but we thought they'd enjoy some sunshine, so they may be featuring in pix in future.
