After an almighty thunderstorm overnight, Yangshuo was sunny and warm. We haggled on the quayside for a trip on a 'bamboo' raft to see the Cormorant fisherman. After a lot of shouting on her phone, the fisherman's wife rounded up her husband and son, who towed his dad's raft next to ours to a backwater where the cormorants had a noose put around their necks to prevent them swallowing their catch. We were lucky to see one of the birds catch a large fish and were duly posed with the bird for photos. We later found out they normally fish at night, so we'd dragged the poor man out of bed.
After lunch we were taken back to Guilin via Shangri-La, a tourist village showing the 4 majority ethnic groups, their architecture and history. YongHong explained that it's not aimed at Western visitors, and the Chinese visitors certainly found us a novelty. They stare at Ros' blonde hair, and teenagers often ask her to pose with them for photos. I was told I am a miracle because I have blue eyes!
In the evening we went on a boat on a lake. There were bridges from around the world-miniature versions of the Golden Gate, a suspension bridge based on the Arc de Triomph and one made of crystal. All were lit up, and in between were stages with musicians playing folk songs and dancers. YongHong was very proud to tell us Guilin is twinned with Orlando, Florida!
