Mel's Travels
Hola!
So I can't believe that I've managed to update this thing again!! Well done me!
Update: Met up with 4 other people who are in my group on Wednesday morning, 2 girls from the uK and a couple from the USA. Got a flight to a place called Sucre which is south of La Paz. Met up with 6 other people in our group - 2 couples and a girl from Australia and a girl from the USA. All seem real friendly so happy! Sucre is a beautiful place..if I could figure out how to put photos on this thing then à would show you, it may be that I'll have to show you when I get back! Anyway, as I was saying, really pretty place! Only stayed there for 2 nights so it would have been good to stay maybe a couple of nights more. There was an amazing market there with more fruit than you could shake a a stick at! There were also bits of dead animals I would rather not have seen, but hey at least they don't waste anything!
On Thursday I went horse riding!! A few of us went on a trek into the mountains to a ranch type place in the middle of nowhere, went for a hike to check out some waterfalls that were actually more like a trickle then went back to the ranch for the biggest BBQ in the world EVER! Fab day, severe saddle soreness though only eased by the beautiful beautiful countryside we saw along the way! We had a local Bolivian cowboy called Johnny, how authentic! My horse drew the short straw with me as a passenger I think and looked like it was about to drop a one point but it battled through and got me there in roughly one piece!
Friday was fun! Some of us took the Dino bus from Sucre town into the hills to a cement works where they had found dinosaur footprints - true!! It was made worth while by the huge plastic dino which really looked at home among the hills!! Got to wear a bob the builder hat too...even better! At lunch time we made our way to another town called Potosi which is further south still and at extreme altitude, needless to say headaches all round! Had a potter around then went for some dinner...I had llama and it was yummy! Never thought I would be saying that but its true! Absolutely freezing in Potosi!!!!
Saturday, which I think may be today...so confused! Anyway , yes, Saturday...We all went to the silver mines in Potosi this morning which is what Potosi is famous for. Got kitted out with waterproofs, hard hats and flash lights and into the mines we went! The mine is still a working mine so you could hear little explosions a distance off! We were told that we should take the miners presents so we each bought coca leaves and dynamite..great fun not sure its such a great combo though! Children under the age of 12 are not permitted to work in the mines, even so I saw a 7 year old boy being trained by his grandfather.
This afternoon we caught a bus and had a 7 hour ride to a town called Uyuni which is where I am writing this from. It really is cold here!! I just had to buy a woolly hat and gloves because its soooo cold! Only here for one night then tomorrow we are off on a 3 day 4x4 adventure across nearby salt flats! So, I'll try and update you again when I get back to La Paz in 4 or 5 days..thats if I haven't frozen to daeth by then!! Adios!!
