Today we were up early and headed off to explore Edinburgh. Of course the Castle was our priority but before that we went to a small cafe named Deacon Brodie's cafe for breakfast. Deacon Brodie was a very respectable businessman in the 18th century who also was a burglar and thief. In fact he was the inspiration behind Robert Louis Stevenson's tale of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. He was ironically executed by hanging using a gallows that he had designed.
Following a delicious breakfast there, we walked up the hill to Edinburgh Castle and spent a number of hours looking through it. We were both stunned by the size and history of the place.
After that we wandered the Royal Mile and got on a hop on/off bus around the new and old parts of the city. We also walked up to Greyfriars Kirk and saw the memorial to "Greyfriars Bobby" whose picture is attached to this blog. His story is truly one of loyalty and one of my favourites. If you don't know it - look it up and read it!
Finally we had dinner at the Deacon Brodie Pub and went back to pack before heading to Loch Ness in the morning.
