So we left Lake Argyle on a hot day (36 deg) travelling towards Purnulurnu Natinal park (Bungle Bungles) we decided on staying 50 kms out on the main road at Spring creek. We got up and left by 6 am ready for the drive in (we had heard the road was shocking) we let down the tyres and came across a road closed sign. We decided to ignore it but 30 kms and an hour later we were advised to turn back as the park was being evacuated due to fire. We decided after talking to Rangers, who said it would be closed for a few days, to head on south to Halls Creek and the Wolfe creek crater.
Approx 250 k's of pretty bad roads, but well worth the trip.
The crater is something else, you wish you could have been a witness to something that great.
300,000 years ago a 50,000 tonne meteorite crashed here leaving a crater
150 metres deep, it has since filled in a little , but still incredibly impressive. We stayed the night camped out there, it was very peaceful, no John Jarrett.
We continued back to Halls creek to ring the ranger again........ Still closed.... So we made the executive decision not to keep waiting and take the Duncan highway (gravel) toward Katherine (450 k's) past some stunning countryside.
We ended up saying the night on the side of the road, in the middle of no where. We had all of 4 cars pass us on this stretch. It was also the slowest part of our trip thus far.
We are now in Katherine, mum has just told me that my grandfather was stationed here before he went to Timor. We are here for a couple of days , to get rid of some dust and then on to Darwin
