We are back in the relative luxury of Luganville, with cafes, restaurants and a ATM (there are only two places in Vanuatu that you can get cash and you cannot use plastic).
We are only here to get a flight and provisions for the next island. Luganville is full of divers that come to dive the numerous WWII wecks around here (not our scene).
The next island has no ATMs, two shops, food shortages and very basic accomodation. Liz has been buying supplies: mosy coils, a clean sheet, baked beans and peanuts. I have been looking for possible accomodation that is not going to send her over the edge. I even went to the tourist office here to see if they knew of anywhere. I thought it was amusing when one of the three places advertised was a section of concrete floor large enough for two with the nearby sea to wash in. All this including all meals for 3 pounds a night.
Unfortunately the weather has not improved. We sat at the airport watching it tip it down, concequently the flight had to be cancelled. I was going to take the cargo boat to save money but this was also cancelled.
Back at a guesthouse we have been killing time using the free wi fi to do some travel planning and also went down to million dollar point to snorkel. This is named after the millions of dollars worth of kit the Americans dumped after the war. Large ships, tanks, fork lift trucks - everything. Diving down and sticking my head in one of the holes in the side of the ship it reminded me of the similar scene from Jaws.
We decided to walk back from the point, this gave me a good chance of looking at the large spiders that I noticed when we drove past here from the airport. Along the side of the road ran a telephone line a good 20ft or so off the ground. Spanning the line to the ground were spider webs and these were covered with 3 inch spiders - eekk!
Incidently you have probally noticed that these blogs are getting more frequent and lengthy, I have switched to writing these offline on Lizes iPhone (I normally feel like killing someone after using the Internet cafes here and they cost you dear).
People have been moaning about not seeing any photos since the guest house at Nairobi. This is because I take most photos using my camera and there has been nowhere that I can download the photos without costing me the earth. However I have taken some photos around our room at the guesthouse using the iPhone (this is to prove that we are oversees and not in Blackpool or somewhere). The photos that you have previously been seeing on the blog entries are the ones in the off exploring libary and are pretty crap.
The next place is the main reason why I wanted to come to unknown Vanuatu (the next blog will reveal all).
I was reading a flight magazine that had an interesting story related to how unknown Vanuatu is. In 1979 an entourage set off for England to have an audience with the queen following independance. The route took them via USA, the first problem was that the Americans had never heard of Vanuatu and decided to lock up the entorage accusing them of making a country up and therefor having fake passports. The story went on explaining that they did not know that you needed a suit and hat to see the queen. I'll fitting suits and hats were mustered at short notice, the men had to cut their affros with nail clippers to get their hats on and hold onto their trousers to keep them up (the full story put a grin on my face especially when you know the locals).
It is now Saturday and just seen the football scores - oh dear. Anyway after a three day delay to the flight, the sun is shining and hopefully we will be on our way today.
It will be a while (at least 5 days) before we get back to somewhere that has Internet.
