This being a very local town was confirmed when we tried to find a vegetarian breakfast. We walked around one of the squares but ended up being greeted into a small cafe overlooking another square.
We explained that we were vegetarian but this did not deter the owner from offering us some chicken. We said we didn't want meat in Spanish. She offered us potatoes, but this also turned out to contain meat. I spotted roasted potatoes and asked to have those instead. She gave us three small potatoes but being still intent on giving us meat went over to a display cabinet to show us more meat. It was comical, she diddn't believe that we diddn't want meat. After going through all the meat dishes and getting "No Gracias" she eventually gave up and went off to buy some eggs that we requested right at the beginning. Alan who had been living in Venezuela for ages said that they just can't get their heads around it. Despite being fluent in Spanish he too had to send food back that contained meat.
We both got a very runny omelette, croisants and a very milky weak coffee. I took a picture of the coffee to show how anemic it was. The owner obviously thought I was doing this for positive reasons as she invited me to take a picture of the food selection that we refused to eat!
Before going onto the salt cathedral we had a look at the church and square. An old Columbian lady came up to Liz to say hello. Austine Powers came to mind when we caught sight of a very large mole complete with hairs on her chin. We did the pleasantries avoiding any mention of moles and carried onto the salt cathedral.
The salt cathedral was the new version after the old one became too unsafe. Large cathedral like chambers left after salt excavation were kitted out with hugh crosses and scultures made out of salt. The most impressive aspect was the atmosphere created by the way that the salt features and caverns were illuminated. Blue lights gave the salt features an attractive translucent look. These also created eerie shadows down the vast alien like caverns.
We were impressed despite us both expecting more inticate carvings. I suppose that this might have detracted from the simple contempary style it had.
We set of back around lunch time, so was feeling a bit peckish. On the way we passed a restaurant owner hawking his restaurant. We saw no harm in seeing the menu so went in. Nothing vegy on the menu, so we went for the door. The owner was not going to give us up so easily, he listed the meals on the menu which of course contained meat. Explaining the situation he proclaimed to do a vegy dish. We were understandibly sceptical and wanted to be sure it didn't contain any meat. He listed the ingredients but we didn't know the Spanish for all the meats so went back to getting him to say no meat. He then said "solo carne" (only meat), that was it for Liz we legged it.
