From now on I am not sure how regular I can make blogs for the days that I have to go, so I make the two about both Islands that I have visited these days. Tuesday was a day on Fitzroy Island. To get there we had to take a 45 minutes lasting ferry ride. I usually love ferries, they remind me of the holidays we had when I was a kid. We never went to foreign countries, but to the islands in the north of our country, with a ferry. So yes, this was a nice one too. The woman at the reception of the YHA Cairns scared me before, by telling me to get some medication for seasickness. The sea was still rough from the cyclone that had passed. She was right, the sea was rough and it was impossible to walk on that thing, but nothing to be scared of. I enjoyed the rough ride. ;)
Once on the island I got my snorkling gear and left to find a place to try it for the first time. It took me a while to get used to the glasses and the thing in your mounth, but I was surprised that even I was floating to easily. With the fins on your feet to move, the arms were free to navigate and to use my waterproof camera. I was a bit scared in the first place, but later I enjoyed it to float around and look at the fish under me. The view was a bit disappointing though, no colored fish or corals, but only small fish. I wasn't ready to spend whole day in the water, because I planned on doing some walks too on the island.
After lunch I returned the snorkling gear and left to see the lighthouse on the other side of the island and to make a big climb up a mountain. Yep, I am back in my strolling/climbing mode these days. :) The lighthouse was on an amazing spot and I finally had the time to try my camera to make some summer jump pics. Nobody there to take them, so i spent about 15 minutes jumping in the air haha. :)
The next climb was The Summit, and lead me to the highest point of the island. A bit disappointing that the real top was closed for public, but when they say it's not safe, I better don't go there then. I'd like to make it back home in one piece and alive.... Once I was back from this walk, I did another small one to a beach, and again nobody there. I don't know where all those people from the ferry went, but it felt like whole China was on the ferry, but didn't see them on the island. Better for my health, because I can't stand the way they eat, with open mouths...
I think they should rename this island to Lizard Island, I have never seen so many lizards on one day as here! Sometimes I almost stood on one, but they always managed to run away before I placed my foot on the ground. :) The most were small ones, but two were about 80 cm long. The first one was crossing my footpath and I waited patiently till he was gone again. Meeting a lizard is not on my wishlist these days, ya know. The second one was around a corner when I came. He was more scared of me then I was of him so that's good. He made way for me. :)
Anyway, the ferry left the island at 4.30 already, so I had just enough time to find some shells on the beach before I had to come back. The sea was less rough this time, and the whole day we've had sun on the island too. Amazing after that rainy day in the rainforest. That is why I decided to come to the eastcoast, sunshine and sea. ;) Once back in Cairns, I had to make way to my hostel to pick up the luggage and find the busstop for the busride to Townsville. 5.5 hours in the bus to go. I love the greyhound busses by the way, they have free wifi on board, you can charge your stuff in the bus and the seats are quite good too.
It was 00.35 when I arrived in Townsville and had to find the bed for the night. All went good, and another short night was coming up. A ferry to Magnetic Island at 7.45 am... Ain't life wonderfull, strolling around the country and just enjoying? I wish there were really no worries, just like the Aussies always say when you thank them for something. :)
