Jodhpurs was founded un 1459 by Rao Jodhaji and quickly became an important city because of it's central location between the Delhi-Gujarat trade route. The city was protected by one of the most impenetrable forts in history. Today, it is the second largest city in Rajasthan and is nicknamed the "blue city" because many of the houses in the old city are painted blue.
On our way from Udaipur to Jodhpur, we made a quick stop in Ranakpur to see some Jain temples. The temples were in the middle of no where but they were well worth the stop. Every white marble column was intricately carved and it is said that no two of the about one hundred columns share the same design. The temples were clean and in good condition. It took about one hour to visit them and we then caught the next bus to continue on our way to Jodhpur.
Jodhpur is a big city but does no offer much sightseeing besides the imposing fort. We walked around the fort and visited the outside but did not go inside because I'd the ridiculous entry fee for foreigners. Another famous attraction in the old city is the Omelet Man, a 70 year old man who has been making omelet sandwiches at his food stall for over 49 years. He claims to go through about 800 eggs a day making omelets and sells about 1000 eggs a day to his customers. We went to eat at his food stall and ate a delicious omelet sandwich with cheese for a very reasonable price!
We only stayed one night in Jodhpur before moving on to Jaisalmer.
