Last night's meal in Asunción was complicated by a power cut, which seemed to affect quite a few blocks of the city. Luckily we had placed our orders and had just got our drinks when the lights went off, so we sat sipping in the dark for about 20 minutes, and then a waiter arrived with a candle on a plate, singing "Happy Birthday to you....".
We thought that was quite funny, until we saw that the candle wasn't much bigger than one you'd have on a cake, and half of it had been melted to make a puddle of wax to stick the candle to the plate! It burned out just as he arrived with two more, which were exactly the same size as the first one. A few minutes later, just as they had burned right down and were in danger of incinerating the plates, there was a gust of wind, both candles blew out, and at exactly the same moment all the lights came back on! Hurray!
Today was a 'drive day'. We left at 7.30am and arrived in Saez Peña this evening, at about 6.30 pm. This morning we crossed the border out of Paraguay and back into Argentina. This involved quite a lot of standing around, and they made a thorough search of the truck, but at least we didn't have to unpack all our luggage, and we were on our way again within an hour. So another change of currency (thank goodness), and the clocks have gone forward, so we are 4 hours behind UK time again.
At the border, it was discovered that one of our group had kept VERY quiet about the fact that it was her birthday today! So when we got back on the truck, we sang happy birthday to her in English, Spanish, French and Dutch (the Dutch was by far the nicest, as it's a completely different tune) .
Tonight, Tony and I managed to find a shop that sold balloons with Feliz Cumpleaños written on them, and gave them to her at the meal, which we all paid for as a birthday treat. Saez Peña seems to be a nice little town, from what we've seen of it, but it's only a flying visit. We'll be setting off again at 6.30am for the 11 hour drive to Salta, so we'll be very glad to stay there for 3 nights to have a break from being in the truck........... Goodnight.
