The flight to Singapore was just about 6 and a half hours. (i initally thought i got on the wrong plane because it said it was going to Kuala Lumpar- and then thought- oh maybe its the same place, and eventually discovered it was moving on to Kuala Lumpar). I watched my favourite Disney movie on the plane- The Little Mermaid, and also got breakfast and lunch! We arrived a little late, and was late arriving through the gates due to me filling out the wrong form a couple of times.. and there was no one there. No one with my name on a card like I expected. So i put my camera away (I wanted to take a picture of this) and with the feeling that airport arrivals wasnt my thing i phoned up the agency that was supposed to collect me and a couple of minutes later a Singaporlean woman showed me my name. (Actually i couldnt see my name on the card i just nodded it was me coz i knew she'd be going somewhere).
Her name was Irene, Singaporlean born and bred and also quite chatty. Unfortunately i barely understood a word she said but i did get the adverts plugged in there now and again- Singapore has a low crime rate of only 2% and it was very safe for a woman to go out on her own at night. It's also a 'fine' city. You get fined for almost everything- sptting chewing gum, dropping litter, dogs.. I haven't seen a single animal. Hence why its one of the cleanest cities I've ever seen (also does occasionally have funny smells). She also told me about the sites to see.
Got to the Hangout hostel at about 10pm (12th Feb), which had won some kind of travel awards and i was quite impressed. It was clean and spacious and the dorms were nice too. I was in a single sex dorm and got chatting to 3 girls, 2 of which were doing the same route as me (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, L.A). There's also a veg out room where there is free internet access, coffee/tea, T.V and magazines. And there's a restaurant on the ground floor (again won some kind of award).
Next morning I had a walk down to the city centre, had a starbucks coffee and went to a mall. It had 7 floors! I had to go back to the hostel to change as it was so humid- i had thought it was cloudy and windy and put some jeans and a coat on! Then i walked into Little India - which is exactly what it says - a little piece of India ( and i havent even been to India). Bought a silk scarf , colour advised by the seller and even bartered two dollars off the price. And also bought a hair clip and and a chain. And i had a pint of beer in a bar called The Prince of Wales.
That night i booked onto the night Safari, and myself and 2 of the girls Laurann and Tash walked around the jungle looking at the animals, taking photo's (without flash). There were some amazing animals there, and got quite close. We saw lions, tigers, giraffes, elephants, hyenas (they are very ugly), crocodiles, bats and all sorts of other animals who's names i cannot remember.
Next morning (Valentine's Day) Laurann, Liz and I got a cable car accross to Sentosa Island, which is an island resort just off Singapore. It felt like Alton Towers/Disney Land. We explored the heritage of Singapore, originally British owned and a mix of all nationalities.. Chinese, Malaysians, Asians. There is no one culture in Singapore. And some scary looking manequins.
Went to the beach (which is all imported) and spent a couple of hours drinking a beer and sunbathing on a huge bed.
That night, we got ready and went to Raffles Hotel (one of the world's most famous hotels) and had a Singapore Sling in Long Bar in Singapore where you eat pine monkey nuts and throw the shells on the floor (tradition)! It was S$21 but worth it- and something that has to be done. The hotel was amazing- we went inside the wrong entrance- but it was spectacular.
Bought cadbury's chocolate from a supermarket- its the worst chocolate I've ever tasted in my life. It has a special ingredient that stops it melting. Back to the hostel, went to the roof top and drank raspberry vodka and lemonade with Liz for a couple of hours.
And today 15th Feb- I leave. Its felt like I've been in this city for weeks. Amazing how much you can see and do in a short amount of time.
I had the best meal in nearly 3 weeks at a cafe called Mr Beans. It was Sirloin steak, with mashed potatoes and brocolli and carrots! MMMM.. and I had a blueberry dessert. Transfer to the airport met a girl called Kathy from Scotland who was coming back from Oz and she forced me to buy perfume in the airport- so i did. Its very nice.
