Maria's 2006-7 Round the World Trip
Hi there everyone,
Its been a few days since I have been in touch so whilst I am waiting to leave Bangkok and catch the overnight train to Khoa Sok national park, Thailand I thought that I would update you all on the last 5 days or so.
Well, can't quite remember where I got to. I think that I had just arrived in Siem Reap and I was about to go and look at temples. I thought that it would be quite dull after a while, looking at temple after temple but actually once you read about the history of each individual one, it was fascinating. I had a great driver and I rode on his moto for the 3 days and he showed me around.
I also saw my first elephant! My driver said that I was a crazy english woman when I made him stop the bike so that I could go up to the elephant and talk to it. I have also seen gibbons and macaques so I was really chuffed to be seeing some wildlife too!
It was pretty exhausting sightseeing as I was up at 8 am the first day and then 3am the next to watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat, the most famous of the Angkor temples. I also went for a mini trek through the Cambodian jungle, which was unexpected but a pleasant surprise.
On my last night in Siem Reap I was sat in the bar of my guest house and got talking to a fantastic Ozzy girl called Holly. We decided to go on a drinking mission and watch the football. We tracked down a pub with a big screen and along with 100 other face painted England fans we had a fantastic night, even though it was a draw we had to make the most of it as we had stayed up until 2am for kick off. The game finished at 4am and I stayed up as my bus was at 6am back to Phnom Penh.
I have made quite a few contacts during my time in Siem Reap and I feel a bit more like a hardened traveller now.
I stayed overnight in my hotel at Phnom Penh then, I flew to Bangkok at 6am yesterday. Great news that my fear of flying has gone, I have not been sick once on any of my flights and I am either so tired or so busy when I am at the airport that I've stopped worrying about it. Yesterday, I was so engrossed in my guide book I did realise the plane was moving. It's so good for me as it was always a bit traumatic flying and puking!
So I arrived in bangkok, to be honest when I came here for about 10 hours last week I wasn't overly impressed. I've really enjoyed the last 2 days here though, the shopping is great and its meant I can get a fast internet connection, do some washing and the like. I checked into my hotel and I am sharing a room with Nadia who is also on my intrepid travel trip from Thailand - Singapore. I was quite surprised yesterday evening when we had our first group meeting that I am the oldest! Oh my god, they are all 18-21, and you can really tell with most of them. Nadia is lovely and seems a lot more on my wavelength so I'll leave judgement of the others until I've spent more time with them! We leave Bangkok in a few hours and board an overnight train to Khoa Sok national park (obviously I am very excited). Over the next few days I get to sightsee through the jungle on an elephant and go on night safaris - I'll be in heaven! And the overnight train should be an experience too.
Having a great time and really enjoying being away and its sooo good to relax and just think about food, shopping and the jungle!
I'm trying to upload photos after I have sent this update but I am not sure whether it will work or not. Well, hope that you are well, many thanks for staying in touch and keeping me updated with your life too!
Till next time....... probably from Krabi
