Sorry again we haven't updated in a while guys - hopefully ur still interested... Well we left Cairns on the 3rd Nov after getting a job at a smalll pub called 'The Lions Den'. It was said to be a Hotel but when we arrived after a 5 hour mini bus journey along the tarmac Inland road that joins Cooktown to Cairns (with a HUGE hangover from the nite before as we drank 4litres of 'Goon' - cheap wine in a box, and had about an hours sleep and left at 7am!) It was anything but a hotel that we had in mind.. We're talking a 'pub' made for a bunch of miners back in 1975 and is situated along the Coastal road that joins Cooktown to Cairns - which is not tarmac, but a dirt track and used to be the main road untill they made the new one a couple of years ago. The Den was literally in the middle of no-where almost surrounded by dessert land. Obviously we were a little shocked but we just got on with it and after meeting everyone there and shown to our room ( a small port' a' cabin, which had A/C and a double bed) we settled in pretty quickly. It has a Creek that runs around the back of the place and quite a bit of land behind where people can camp out for 8 bucks a nite and really nice Safari Lodges for people to stay in - they're pretty cool and on stilts... The Creek is where we spent a lot of the time on our day off or free time before and after working.. It was gorgeous and as it was so hot there it was such a refreshing experience everytime you jumped in. Pam and Chris were the owners and there was a Legendary guy called Tommy who lived around the back of the pub in a caravan and had lived there for about 40 years! he was Hungarian and was full of stories of his life.. His Favourite word was C*NT and everybody was one... lol. We were working with 2 Swedish birds and a German chick for the first week but the Swedish left after that, hence that's why we got the job.. The swedish were well, how do you say, lovely girls but slags! No sorry that's rude they weren't slags at all they just slept with about 6 or 7 of the miners that live on the site and work at the mine a few Km's down the track. Not too bothered but it was just the fact that we had just met them and they were telling myself and Martina all about it. It was sort of like... 'oh, ok then. Thanx for that' after they told me - too much Information! Verena was the German chick and she was lovely, such a happy person all the time even when we all had hangovers and felt like s***! Didn't stop smiling the whole time we were there! Then as the Swedish left, 3 Irish lads (Colin, Cadsey and Merv) rolled up and changed the whole atmosphere of the place.. As soon as they arrived it was obvious we were guna have some fun. I think we all spent the first weeks wages back to bar and had some really good nites! a couple of them ending in Colin going missing at about 3 in the morning and was found asleep in a pile of hay round the back of the cabins! Another was when some friends of theirs came up to meet them and stayed 2 nites and on the second it was much of the same leading to a drunken drinking competition between Merv and Leno... Leno who had bin there for a couple of months and like the supervisor of the bar. I think he's in his late 20's and from NSW and he was such a legend. He always used to say, '..ay..' after pretty much everything he said and all the guy drank was Black Sambucca! ... Anyway the competition ended in them both downing 3 glasses of Goon but the last of Lenos didn't go down to well and came straight back up! lol. I had pics of the nite but my camera memory card was fried in a computer and I lost everything... luckily tho we've got this website so they're all on here. Colin was working in the kitchen but after a few days asked Mar how to make roast potatoes and admitted he'd never been in a kitchen before in his life! lol. he pulled it off tho. After they left it was just myself, Martina and Leno but soon after Bob from just outside London arrived and the drinking started all over again. We spent the first couple of nites playing poker in the cabin till late and drinking there.. Then either some friends of Bob's or the Irish came up and it was another messy nite around the camp fire down by the creek. Mark, Dougie and Julia ended up sleeping out on the ground that nite as they were skint. lol. After that they went to P.K's in Cape Tribulation and we were guna join them a couple of days later as it was our last week, but we managed to work another week cus we needed the money! Just as we left a new girl arrived and Bob and her kicked it off right away ;-)... We said our goodbyes then headed back down towards Cairns and stopped off in Cape Tribulation on the way back... We had a wicked time at The Den, but we left at the right time and managed to take with us just under 1000 bucks each...
