We had quite an early start today for our flight to Kuala Lumpur so we were up at around 6am. After a change of terminals we were soon checked in for our Silk air flight to KL. We made our way through to the departures area and figured out what lounges were available to us since we were flying cattle class again. The first was called The Green Market and was like a restaurant that had a buffet of weird things, so after having a bowl of Japanese soup, which was tasty, we left and headed to the Ambassador Transit Lounge which was more like a standard airport lounge but Mandy still managed to find an unusual dish to try, it was like a rice porridge/soup and was not that great but you have got to try these things! We used the time in there to do our blog and then went for a wonder around the huge terminal before heading to the gate.
We didn't have long to wait before we were on board, the flight and aircraft was pretty non-eventful as it was only a 40 minute flight. The cabin crew were very nice and still offered papers, magazines and blankets, then after take-off a very quick drinks service before it was time to descend into KL. Transit through KL airport was straight forward and soon we were on our way on the high speed train to the city centre which takes 28 minutes as the airport is 80km from the city. We transferred there to the metro that took us to near our hotel. The six stop underground journey cost us 50pence each! As we left the underground and followed the signs to our hotel, we somehow found ourselves walking through a compact and very busy shopping centre with our suitcases, but we made it to the hotel lobby none the less.
The hotel is very close to the Petronas Towers so we decided that we would walk there for our first bit of sightseeing, it was also about time for some food so after a bit of a walk round the mall that is connected to the towers we ate at a restaurant that Mandy had heard of. We both ordered a typical Malaysian dish each and we were not disappointed. During lunch the rain had started which kind of scuppered our plans, so for the first time on this trip, we actually looked in some shops in the mall, and quickly discovered it’s more expensive for the same stuff than at home so it didn’t last long and we never bought anything.
The rain wasn’t letting up so we took the metro back to the hotel (which cost 20pence!) and had a snooze before heading to the lounge for cocktail hour. We didn’t really have much expectation for what might be on offer since the Double Tree brand is usually the poorer sister of the Hilton brand, but boy were we wrong! As it turns out, this lounge had the one of the best spreads we’ve seen and we definitely made the most of it. We ended up staying in the lounge until about 8 then headed down to the hotel bar for a few cocktails where a Filipino house band amused us until it was time for bed!
