We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City at around 7pm on Friday night and managed to walk to our hotel with the help of a couple of travel agencies pointing us in the right direction. After making it to our hotel, we grabbed some food from Burger King of all places and had a quiet night.
On Saturday, we walked to the War Remnants Museum which was a fair trek in the heat. The museum was really busy as its one of the main sights to see in the city. There were several American planes, tanks and a chinook helicopter outside of the museum presumably for the Vietnam war. We couldn't tell if the planes had been shot down during the war but we imagined so. We then ventured inside and negotiated our way through the crowds on the three floors of the museum. The displays are mainly photographs of the war and a lot of them are very graphic images. A lot of the information is propaganda from the government and it would be good to hear both sides of the story but there is no doubt that a lot of things done by the Americans during the war were very wrong. We spent a good hour and a half looking around and although we were disturbed by some of the things we had seen, we were glad that we went and learned more about the war from a Vietnamese perspective. After leaving the museum, we walked to the Notre Dame Cathedral which was surprisingly impressive and not the kind of building we expected to see in Vietnam. We then ventured into one of the many shopping centres and grabbed some
lunch whilst browsing some western shops for the first time in a long time.
On Saturday night, we ventured out for some food on the main backpacker street in town which is just around the corner from where we are staying. We then decided to have a bit of a drink so we grabbed some beer and wine from a shop and watched a film back in the room.
Sunday was a bit of a slow day to be honest as we were both suffering a bit from the previous nights alcohol intake!! We had a look around a few of the shops around us and grabbed some lunch and tea and that was pretty much that.
On Monday, we had booked a trip to visit the Cu Chi tunnels which is where the rebels attacked the Americans from during the war. The tunnels are absolutely tiny and we only walked through 20m of them and we felt claustrophobic. To think that there was 250km of these tunnels being used during the war and that they housed 9000 people is truly astonishing!! We enjoyed the trip even though our tour guide kept making us do the corniest poses of our whole trip so far. Particularly unmemorable was when he made me climb up a vine and then Beth do likewise and we had to kiss. This photo was promptly deleted!!!
Today is Tuesday and its already our final day in Vietnam. We've done a bit of shopping today before getting our stuff sorted, including some passport photos which I was desperate for. We've loved our time in Vietnam an its been one of our favourite countries so far. Hoi An has probably been the highlight but we've loved everywhere including the big cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. We are looking forward to Cambodia and are not quite sure what to expect.
