Hello Tulum, nice to see you again! It's been two days since we arrived back in Tulum following a very, very long journey and I finally feel rested enough to start noting down our experiences. I was reminded of the journey to the same destination 3 years ago; after an hour long trip to the airport,11-hour flight, a 2-hour procedure at the very hot and humid Cancun airport and two more bus journeys awaiting, I was wondering "is this all really worth the effort?". Well again, yes! Tulum is a beautiful and relaxing place to visit.
We're staying at the hotel called Las Ruinas - just a quick recommendation for the potential travellers to look for somewhere else to stay. I never realised that some of the Mexican buildings don't have a single window looking outside, but only to the inside corridor!
We had our first "backpacking dinner" the night we arrived, in one of the taquerias. It was a real challenge deciding and communicating in Spanish what we wanted to eat, even though there is basically only one meal with different fillings on offer. We settled in the end for tacos with chorizo and pastor; I made a conclusion that 'pastor' is turkey, however to this day, the only translation I've found is 'shepherd' or 'herd', so you decide what it is for yourself :)
We cycled down to the beach yesterday. Unless you are prepared to pay around £15 for a round trip, it is best to rent 2 bikes for £8 and cycle down a lovely cycling path.
Finally arriving to the beach, which is the signature of Tulum and....what?! Lots is Seagrass washed out, lots of people and some beer bottle caps peeping from the sand. It is still a very idyllic scenery and we managed to find a quiet pocket amongst the palm trees to relax, but it didn't feel like our little piece of paradise any longer. That still didn't stop me from taking a dip a few times and catching some sunshine, perhaps a bit carelessly, as I've got the worst sunburn ever!
Since the forecast is calling for some rainy weather starting tomorrow, we have decided to move on a bit earlier; we're taking the bus tomorrow night and heading down to Belize City and then a water taxi to Caye Caulker.
