Woke to a lovely clear blue sky. Leisurely start to day. Decided to balance out last night by having breakfast at Hermits rest, at the west end of the shuttle service that runs along the south rim. So we left the hotel walked the few steps to the rim, still a wow, and meandered along the rim to the shuttle stop. These buses run every ten minutes up to the farthest end of the west side of the rim approx 8 miles to Hermits rest. Along the way you can hop on and off. The bus then returns back to the village. All along we saw fabulous views but had decided to go to the end first and have breakfast there. Quick trip to snack bar and fuelled up on sarnies and cookies...not the most healthiest of breakfasts. The temperature was mid eighties f. We opened our eyes and started to walk along the rim to Pima Point. It's hard to find the words to describe the scale and views you have, so I'll stick to the facts. We could now see the Colardo river moving though the canyon with Rapids every now and then. Birds swooped low overhead, not the hoped for condor but turkey vultures and Ravens. We walked a mile or so to the next vantage point, The walk was very quiet and we hardly saw anyone a perfect moment. At Pima Point the views were different but still massive. The canyon is so huge and made up of lots of canyons. We then shuttle bused and walked along the rim taking in another few viewpoints - Powell . At Powell we walked to a promontory that went out from the rim. This gave us stunning views again. It was great to just sit there quietly and take in the awesomeness no feel very small. We caught a shuttle to Maricpa . We walked to this point. Again you could walk right up to the edge. Here there were some railings as the edge dropped off. Health and safety UK would have a field day here!!. Caught the shuttle bus back to the village. It was about 2 pm. As hot had guess what an ice cream again. Bad for diet but walking a lot......... Strawberry for both of us. We joined a ranger talk on the elusive condor. Did not realise at one stage there were only 22 in the world. A breeding programme had now brought up that total to over 200 (not in captivity) of which there are 70 in Grand Canyon. Found out that the picture I thought was a condor was not. It was a turkey vulture with only a six foot wingspan instead of ten foot that a condor has. Dammmmm. We then sat on the El tovar veranda overlooking the rim. Slightly surreal! Feeling very cowboy western. Went back to room for a refresh and decided to shuttle bus to the market plaza to get a picnic for the lunar eclipse that evening. One visit later including yet another national park bag for life and a souvenir mug for Lyn we returned to hotel. After 5 we drove to YavapI point to the west of the village where you get views both east to the sunset and west to the moon. Sunset at 6.20 not as good as yesterday due to cloud but the party atmosphere of the point of the sunset was fun - pizzas and beer being shared as well as a lot of camera talk. Having seen sunset we moved west and found a vantage point for the lunar eclipse. again a jolly atmosphere with lots of cameras and telescopes. We stayed until the total eclipse and saw the blood moon. This was really special with the Grand Canyon beneath it. We then drove the 2 miles back to hotel in complete dark and to our relief we found a parking space opposite hotel. back to room to sample the Grand Canyon brewing company's Pumpkin Spring porter - yum! With cheesecake, key lime and banana cream... Settled down with kobo/book.... Shame we are leaving tomorrow. Staying at the heart of the canyon has been a privilege.
