Shaking The Tree 2005
Dear All
It is only a few hours before I leave Buenos Aires in Spring and fly home to Blighty in winter. Beany, gloves and fleece are within easy reach in the old rucksack.
Buenos Aires has not disappointed on my last day with blue skies and a crisp air. The Anti Bush demonstrators have been replaced with the usual demonstrations of Tango a sense of calm has descended, well, as calm as a Latin American capital can be... This city is fab, if you like dancing, meat, shoes, meat, great parks, meat, fantastic museums, meat, very good vinos, meat, designer shops and of course meat! Macaroni cheese has been ordered and awaits me at home ! If I never see another pizza as long as I live it will be too soon!
I can't believe it has been 6 months, 9 countries, 9 airlines, 3 continents since I last saw you all. I have driven about 18,000 km in a range of vehicles from the sublime to the ridiculous, remember the Flintstone van. My hair is longer and my smile broader and I really can't wait to touch down at Heathrow on Tuesday afternoon. Even though I have had to swap from British Airways to the Iberia red eye to get there, wish me luck...
It has been a rollercoaster of an adventure, Horse Trekking in Chile, Sleeping in a Swag under the night sky in Uluru, feeding Sharks in Tahiti, Helihiking in New Zealand. Not bad for a Sparkly Spinster from Farnbrough approaching forty with a fear of fish and getting muddy!
I've learnt to just be. When you get to a natural wonder experience it with all your senses, not just view it from the mini TV screen of a digital camera. (Though for my Torex colleagues fantastic pressie thanks!) So many people just get to a place and rusharound taking photos, they miss the wonder of the place they have travelled so far to visit. But don't worry there are 1000's of my own pictures to show you.
My advice to anyone thinking of doing this for themselves, alone or with a partner is go for it, you won't regret it. Hey, I will even help you plan it.
Am I settled? Well I know that I want to make the UK my home, but my list of things to do has not shrunk but it has just got bigger... So hopefully when I have a job and some money I will be taking off from Heathrow on another adventure, Patagonia, Iceland, Canada, Samoa .... Anyone want to join the exclusive Hilton Backpackers club...
Thank you for your messages and e-mails,it has helped to keep my spirits up and a smile on my face. The kind words about the emails bashed out against the clock in various cyber cafes around the globe, have made me think about a few things so watch this space.
I soooooooo look forward to catching up when I get home - face to face...
Chao y Adios
