19.02.11 Milford Sound Nature Cruise and Journey to Wanaka
We woke to find that the skies were clear as in it was not raining and the clouds were above the surrounding peaks.
It took around 20 mins for us to get from the lodge, park the van and walk to the terminal…just in the nick of time. I was very pleased to see that we were on the old fashioned sailing/motor boat which was a lovely old iron and wooden vessel, The Milford Mariner.
The scenery was as shown in the photos, very different rock formations from that found in Doubtful Sound. We saw yellow crested penguins as well as our old friends the fur seals, though this time a group of juvenile males.
The waterfalls from the rocks fell up to 250metres into the fiord and the captain went stern to so that the passengers could feel the water and pretend they were under them…ha. We just looked at this part from within as we ate our very delicious lunch of Mariner's vegetable soup.
Our drive to Wanaka was mostly along roads that we have passed along before until we reached Cromwell.
From there we journied through a very fertile grape and fruit growing valley until we reached our Lake Wanaka Aspiring Campervan Park…which really is 5 star. We have 2 hot tubs, a sauna, free wi fi, electricity, water, picnic tables and a shady tree for each site, as well as spotless shower, toilet, kitchen, lounge and laundry facilities, oh and sky TV should we require it, all this for £8.50 a person per night.
