The Saigon to Hoi An leg was our longest non stop trip up the coast of Vietnam. Longer than our flight to Thailand, our journey from the islands to Bangkok and our journey from Bangkok into Cambodia. Long. We braced ourselves as we sat in the train ticket office only to find out that the last remaining tickets for our 17 hour journey in a hard sleeper 6 berth bunk. The discomfort aside, we were more nervous that we'd be sharing our tiny cabin with a noisy gang of Vietnamese and their pet chicken which they'd later decapitate and barbecue in the middle of the bunks. Luckily our worrying was unnecessary as the sleeper turned out to be pretty soft and the 6 berth was only occupied by 2. Us. It was a very pleasant trip up the coast and through the endless rice paddies of Vietnam and by the end began to enjoy the blaring Vietnamese pop music they play to wake you up at every station. We pulled into the beautiful town of Hoi An well rested and excited to reach our destination.
Hoi An for hundreds of years has been Vietnam's epicentre of fashion and tailoring. Temptation proved too strong and before long Sai was sat patiently in a tailors whilst I was measured up for a custom made double breasted suit. I fell victim to a sisterly double team up sell and went from wanting nothing to buying a suit, waist coat and 6 shirts..... Money well spent!
Hoi An is a pretty old town on a picturesque river lined with little restaurants and beautiful French architecture. We fell in love with it immediately and after intending to stay for 2 days, ended up staying for 4 becoming regulars at all of our favourite little spots. On our last night our dinner was ambushed by a crazy Japanese TV presenter and his crew who insisted that I must be a big earner to have a girlfriend like Sai and became rather fixated with us.
With just a short 4km bike ride to the beach, we hired a couple of vintage bikes with baskets and set off around the town like a pair of Von Trapp kids which made a lovely change from terrorising locals on our scooters. We were both in awe of the sunsets and to get the best possible view we hopped on a little boat (floating piece of wood) and were taken around the river armed with cans of beer. It was a perfect end to a chilled few days in our new favourite Vietnamese town.
