Just a quick one today as haven't really done much but I have managed to upload some photos FINALLY so enjoy!!
Yesterday we were up at 5am (horrible!)to catch our 7am train from Jodhpur to Ajmer (kind of a kick in the teeth going back the way we'd just come but there's no direct route from Jodhpur to Udaipur by train and we weren't gonna sit on a bus for like 10hours!) which thankfully was on time so we were able to get on a just go back to sleep for a bit. got in to Ajmer at around 1pm and brushed past the many annoying rickshaw wallahs who were trying to get us to use one to the nearby Honeydew restaurant for a bite to eat. The place was lovely and air cooled (the euphemism for fans as opposed to air con!) but a bit drab and dour. We both had pasta that was supposed to be macaroni with tomato sauce and cheese but I thought it tasted a bit like it had some sort of chinese style sauce on it, very odd!
Anyway, back on the train at 4pm (left on time again thank god!) for another 5 and a half hour journey to Udaipur which went a bit slower than the earlier part of the day but we met a nice elderly indian man and woman who, although they didn't speak much English, kept trying to give us food!we tried an odd tasting fruit which I think is called Cochi Cochi (it looked like a cross between a kiwi and a potato on the outside, a peach and an apple on the inside and tasted like a cross between a date and an avocado-I was not a fan!), as well as some very spicy trail-mix type stuff and some yummy roasted nuts. The old lady was very sweet and kept watching us play Uno!We arrived in Udaipur about 9.30pm and jumped straight into a rickshaw to the Lal Ghat area of town near the riverside where there are loads of hotels and guest houses and we found a lovely room in one called the Poonam Haveli for the next three nights- though we're gutted we can't afford the 007 room which apparently is quite fancy!!
Speaking of 007, a lot of the James Bond film Octop**** was filmed here apparently at the various palaces (City Palace, Monsoon Palace etc) and all the rooftop restaurants in the area have nightly viewings of the film (I love the way they are so proud of this minute bit of stardom- reminds me quite a lot of our wee claims to fame at home!)which is cool. Today we've justed chilled out for the most part after our long day yesterday, we had a leisurely breakfast then headed up to City Palace (took us about an hour to find the bloody place as there was only the one tiny sign for it) for a poke about. Quite an impressive place but I've no photos as it would of cost us about three pounds each more to bring our cameras in, these guys sure know how to make money from everything!!We stopped off at a nice little german bakery (called Edelweiss no less- though run by indians and not germans as with all the german bakeries we've come across!)and had some yummy cake for lunch, and we're gonna go and watch Octop**** and having a nice tea while watching the sunset some. A chilled out end to a very relaxing day all round!!
We're here until Tuesday night when we start our epic journey to Goa (we don't get there til Thursday night-eek!).
Love from Udaipur xxxxxxxxxxxxx
