We got the 'Giant Ibis' bus from Phnom Pehn to Siem Reap. For only $5 extra we had WiFi, croissants and water, an in-bus tour guide and films. Compared to our previous bus experiences it was in a different world!
We had rung our guest house about our arrival and they arranged for someone to pick us up from the bus station for free - the first of many favours from the extremely kind people at 'Angkor Secret Garden'. On arrival we were met by 'Mr Lucky' - this guy does literally everything at the hotel, including sleeping by the gate to let people in throughout the night at any time, yet is still the happiest, friendliest guy. He brought us a drink, explained where everything was in town and the different tours we could do, etc - a great start to Siem Reap! He even said that if the room wasn't ever clean enough tell him and they'd do it again.
On our first day we did a tour of the temples that were further away from Siem Reap as organised - once again - by Stephanie. They were about 40km away so a bit of a ride in a tuk tuk but definitely worth it. The carvings on every stone were intrinsically detailed and the temples weren't too busy. In one temple we met some monks which was really interesting. They told us (while one snapped pics on his smart phone) about how long they study for, that they can't stand near/touch women, and that the are forbidden to drink/smoke. We had seen loads of monks walking around in Phnom Pehn, so it was good to be able to talk to some and answer some of our questions.
That evening we went to the main street in Siem Reap - Pub Street - for some food (some of the best noodles we had had so far for $2) and Stephanie and I got a foot massage on one of the street which was perfect after walking around the temples all day. After getting some ice cream in 'Blue Pumpkin' - which was the best dessert we had had since leaving home - we sadly had to say goodbye to Stephanie for maybe the last time as she was leaving for Myanmar. Hopefully we'll get to see her again in Thailand in a month.
The next day we left the hotel at 5 am to see Angkor Wat at sunrise. Once again Mike had to drag me out of bed, but once we got there it was pretty good. The sunrise wasn't amazing due to the clouds, but was still worth it. It was ridiculously crowded. There were loads of people already there when we arrived, standing at the edge of the water. During the build up to the sunrise it seemed lie some of them were going to start wading through the flood water just to get a better look/picture... We left with the hoards and tried to find the driver in the hoards of tuk tuks outside the temples. After searching back and forth we rang to find him, which he kept reminding us of for the rest of the day and proceeded to explain in clear pigeon English where he would be, pretty sure he thought we were both morons. We managed to get to Angkor Thom, the second biggest temple, while it was still quite which made it much more enjoyable, and hiked around for a while. One of the more impressive temples was Ta Prohm which was the temple where Tomb Raider was filmed. Lots of the structure has great big tree roots growing through it which looks pretty cool. It was under construction and heaving with bus loads of Chinese tourist though, so we got through it as quickly as possible!
The next day we too a break from the temples and went to another hotel with a pool to relax as suggested by Lucky. He kindly took us there and back free of chare and got us a discount. HE also sat and chatted with us for a couple of hours about his life and Cambodia which was really interesting.
On the last evening we were invited to share a meal with the owner of the hotel's family and lucky which was a really enjoyable evening. We got to try some local food, including a beef dish with lemon sauce, and fish with chilies with rice. It was our best night in Cambodia by far as we got to chat to the owner and Lucky about Cambodia and their lives, which felt really homely.
Overall we loved Cambodia, especially how kind and friendly everyone (bar the first hotel) was, and were really sad to leave so soon. Will definitely have to come back again!
