21/5/09 We arrived in the morning, after a long overnight bus journey. The reason why people come to Bonito is because nearby is officially the best freshwater snorkelling and diving site in the world. The owner of our hostel told us all about it when we arrived, and it sounded absolutely amazing, but it was expensive and we didn't have the cash to spare, so Dave and I decided not to do it the next day, when everyone else would be.
We had nearly all day to do things, due to arriveing in the morning. Most of us decided to go to a private resort where they have a section of stream with fish in and a zipline over it, and then giant chess, volleyball, pool, snooker, table tennis, barbecues and deckchairs nearby. We stopped off at a supermarket on the way there to get food for a barbecue - steak, sausages, rolls, vegetables, drinks and crisps - so cheap compared with Britain!
As we drove in some of the others spotted some toucans in a tree by the side of the path, but although Dave was one who saw them, I didn't. Dave and walked back up to get another look, and finally I saw one! Its body was smaller than I had expected, but the beak was unmistakeable. It was very shy and flew between different trees when we got too close, so we didn't manage to get any photos of it, unfortunately.
The stream was great, because since the water was so clear it was really good for snorkelling. There were only a couple of types of fish there, but they were very big and quite colourful. The stream was wide, and varied between being shallow and deep enough to be out of your depth. Nearly everyone went along the zipline, and got very wet doing so, because due to the way it was arranged, you couldn't avoid getting at least your legs in the water at the end; Dave and I always let go before the end so that we fell in completely.
We spent so much time in the water and zipping across it that we only had another hour left before we had to go. Dave played volleyball and I lay down in the sun for a while before going to watch the volleyball when the sun had gone down too far. As we walked up tp where we had to wait to be picked up, four or five green macaws landed in the branches of a sapling right next to us, and then one landed on Angela's shoulder and two others landed on Dave and Mark's heads!
22/5/09 Whilst the others were out nearly all day doing the snorkelling, Dave and I just wandered round the town and spent a lot of time catching up on the internet. Bonito has the most fantastic phone boxes I've ever seen, shaped like parrots, fish, jaguars and toucans, so some photos by them were obligatory...
In the evening we all went out for some drinks. Due to some miscommunications we started off in two groups, one at one bar and one at another. The group Dave and I were in were in a bar called 'Taboa Bar', famous for the hundreds of different drinks made from taboa, a type of cachaça (Brazilian sugarcane brandy) and for the graffiti travellers have left on all the walls and doors. After a drink each Dave and I started to walk home, but then we discovered the other group drinking caipirinhas outside another bar, and they called us over and convinced us to have one too, so we did. It turned out that they had been there quite a while, and were merry as a result. We all played a game involving a pack of cards, and since the caipirinhas were cheap Dave and I had another one each. We stayed there for the rest of the evening, not drinking much more but having a lot of fun anyway.
