"Krak" means "fortress" in Kurdish, I believe. The Crusaders succeeded in keeping the Moslems at bay until 1271, when Baibar finally took the fortress. Neither Saladdin (who came to power in 1176) nor Nur ad-Din (who ruled from 1146-1174) had been successful.
