This is the sail of the original Kon-Tiki raft on which Thor Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Raroia with his crew in 1947. After 101 days and 4 300 miles, he had proved to the world that it was possible to cross the Pacific Ocean on a balsa raft and that the population of French Polynesia could perhaps have come from Peru and colonized these islands 1 500 years ago.
