STALHEIMSKLEIVA - road from Stalheim down to Gudvangen
This incredibly steep road has 13 hairpin bends and a gradient of 18%! It leads from Stalheim, near Voss, down the mountain to Gudvangen on the Nærøyfjord, where our fiord cruise began. Between 1647 & 1909, Stalheim was a stopping-off point for travellers on the Royal Mail route between Copenhagen, Christiania (as Oslo was then known) and Bergen. A road was built for horses and carriages in 1780. The present one is one-way only as there wouldn't be room for buses to pass each other or even cars.
