A near-perfect day for exploring Helsinki. After checking in for tomorrow morning's flight, we struck off for the Market Square Harbor, about a 20 minute walk. Bought a waterbus ticket for the 15 minute ride across the harbor to Soumenlinna sea fortress, joining a large group of school children. This is a complex of four islands joined by bridges. Along with the fortress ruins, there are a number of restaurants, museums, shops, etc, along with private homes for the permanent residents. There's also a Naval Academy. We explored the main highlights on the walking tour which runs the length of the two largest islands. Along with the fortress ruins, I also visited a 1930's era Finnish submarine that is on display. Got back to the city shortly before 2:00 to take in the sights in the historic center of Helsinki. Highlights were the Uspeski and Helsinki Cathedrals. Stopped at a bar featuring Belgian beers. Priscilla has gotten hooked on a cherry beer (Kriek Boon), while I never pass on a wit beer. Stumbled back to the hotel to research restaurants in the neighborhood with good ratings from Trip Advisor. Failing this, we tried the Spanish restaurant adjacent to the hotel. Very good meal. Back to the room to pack, blog, sauna and get to bed early. Up tomorrow at 4:45 for our 7:40 flight to Frankfurt. We are due into Denver at 3:50 pm if all goes well.
