We left at 9am for a not-too-long drive east thru the forest, hugging the Gulf of Finland. A few clouds today, but remaining warm. Our first stop was at the 15C Saha Kabel, a rather unornate and unrestored church/fortification. All of the churches here have fantastic graveyards, however. No stained glass (or windows). On next to Jagala Juga, the waterfall in the background of our blog photo. Very pleasant spot, as you can see. The village of Karmu was our next destination. The town was known for its sailing school and the large number of captains who lived there. (Actually, their families lived there. They weren't around much.) Our first stop there was the Maritime Museum. It is a private museum operated in the old Soviet barracks by an Estonian diver and his family. His daughter provided a tour in English. We walked out to the rocky beach (it is, after all, eSTONia) after, then down the road to an authentic Estonian restaurant that is the former dairy of the neighboring manor house. Wonderful lunch with a hot buckwheat groats salad, roast pork, and an interesting dessert of a cream with roast grains. If we can find a recipe, we will be subjecting our future dining guests to these Baltic delicacies. (At least none of the food has still been moving.). We walked next door to the Palmse manor house after lunch. This was a German family favored by whomever was ruling the area. Not quite sure where the 9 daughters in the family slept, but it appears that each had their own piano. Our final stop was in the tiny fishing village of Altja, now an area of summer homes. Back to Tallinn at 5:30 pm. Beer at the Skybar, sauna (I could easily make this a habit), then packing for our departure early tomorrow for St. Pete. If not censored by the Russkies, I will fill you in after our arrival.
