Flew from Hanoi to Danang in central Vietnam. Danang is close to the old border between North and South Vietnam and was a major U.S. air base during the Vietnam War. We were met by a guide and car and visited a museum dedicated to the Cham empire that ruled this part of Vietnam from about the 4th to the 12th or 13th centuries at which point the Khmer empire in Cambodia conquered this area and the Cham people dispersed throughout southeast Asia. We then drove to Hoi An. Until about the 16th century, Hoi An was a major trading centre for all of East Asia. Ships and traders from all of east Asia came to Hoi An and many, particularly Chinese and Japanese stayed. Today, Hoi An is known for its clothing production, particularly tailored clothing and most specifically silk. Over 600 tailor operations are located here. It also features miles of beautiful beaches and, in the last 15 years, has become a major tourist location. The streets are loaded with tailor shops and restaurants. Prices are very low. A man's custom tailored suit, with good material, can be purchased for around $60. Also, it is hard to spend more than $35 for a dinner for two, including wine.
