The heat and humidity continues. It isn't stopping us from touring but we enjoy getting back to the air conditioned bus and hotel.
This morning we toured Banteay Srei. It is a 10th century Hindu temple and is reasonably well-preserved. It is not large but it is made of a pink sandstone and contains many intricate carvings.
The afternoon may well have been the highlight of our stay in Siam Reap. We visited Ta Prohm, another of the Angkor complex of temples. Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom were much larger and more dramatic, but Ta Prohm is unique. It was also built in the late 12th/early 13th centuries, but it has been left much as it was when first seen by Europeans in the 19th centuries. Little has been done to restore it so it presents very visible evidence of how the jungle took over these sites when they were largely deserted. Birds would drop seeds of the Sprung tree and where the seeds fell, the tree sprouted. Huge trees are rooted on top of walls, roofs, etc. The roots weave their way around, over and through the structures. You have to look at the photos in the album to understand why the site is so fascinating. A few strangler figs also are found on the site including one that was featured prominently by Angelina Joli in the movie "Tomb Raiders". Angkor Wat was also featured in the fim.
