Hey guys... I know I know i'm rubbish compared to the other two at updating this thing, but what can I say I must make the most of the sunbathing whilst I can!!
It is now our last day in Australia :-( I cant belive how fast it has gone! So I am going to attepmt to update you the best I can from when we arrived in Airlie beach!
So we had two nights in Airlie beach before we headed off on our sailing trip around the Whitsundays! We checked into our hostel, a large open bar with live music, first impressions looked good- anyhow we had a dorm room of 10- was ok, not the best but managable! So nested a little then headed out for some essentials, had our best attempts cooking in a kitchen smaller than ours at home (with about 100 rooms there was a fair few pot noodles being cooked!!). As we'd been told this was the place to part-ay, we put our glad rags on and hit the bar! Headed to an Irish bar, with a guy attempting to play his guitar but he was pants and was v quite- not good! Claire wasn't feeling good so Steph and I took her home and decided to make the most of the night! And we did..met loads of people and partied till 4am, thanks mr.wainwright for that suggestion of a Gorilla Snort (port and baileys) i had to chew it- yuk and yes Steph fault as usual for the Sambuca!!
So... Day 2, a very slow start, woke at 1.30pm to an empty dorm, opps! Girlies had done all our laundry and booked our bus- there are good! :) Feeling very rubbish had a lathargic day ate tea in the bar, packed up and had an early ngiht ready for our departure the follwing day!
Day 3
Looking forward to our Mini Sailing Cruise after hearing some very good reports about our boat! We boarded The Atlantic Clipper about 2.30, vaguely remembering meeting some of the fellow passenger's from our night out- we ready for the fun to begin!
So we set off, found our spot on top deck with some og the other girlies to subathe whilst the crew and males set sail! We sailed to unsafe passage past Southmole Island and then past the East and West moles. We then sialed to a bay of Hook Island and dropped the anker down to settle for the night sheltered form the strong winds. Bbq'd fish served for dinner-yummy! Watched the sun go down, socialised, shared and learnt a few more drinking games then it was time to break the Clippers Record! 30 people in the little hottub that is on board- easy :-), yes within minutes 36 of us in it- including one naked irish ginger man- enough said!!.
Day 4
7am wake up- ouch, breakie was served! We left hook Island and went to Corner Bay where they dropped us off. After hiking to the top of the island we came to a beautiful lookout of some of the Whitsunday Islands. We then walked over the islandand to Whitehaven Beach for a few hours, gorgeous white sands, just had to shelter from the showers every so often! We then got back on the boat and had another tasty buffet lunch. Then sailed past Dunbell Island and back to Hook Island. I was time to snorkel the Great Barrier reef :-) After collecting our very flattering stinger suits (to avoid the transparent jellyfish that if they sting you can shut down all your major organs)! Steph settled on the beach in her normal position whilst Claire and I headed out with everyone! Was pretty amazing, seeing all the corals and swimming amongst hundreds of fish! I must admit I wasn't impressed as I thought I would be though seeing as it was the GREAT barrier reef ( I was expecting a lot more than the carribean and Mexico), the water was not so clear, this was probably due to the bad weather they'd had recently i suppose! Headed back to the boat and sailed through Round Corner to Haymen Island and stopped in Blue Pearly Bay for the night. Dave, one of the crew turned on the underneath lights then about an hour later we saw some squid eating little fish, then some dolphins appeared beside the boat eating the squid- awesome! Then apparanly a few hours after, a few sharks appeared to which the dolphins disappeared :( but I missed these! Partied the night away for as long as i could keep my eyes open for, then left steph up for the team!
Day 3
Up 7am sharp again, stinger suits on and straight out to another point on the reef to snorkel- water was a little clear than the previous day and saw some huge fish, was little scared at one point! I swam back to the beach to just float in the shallow waters for a while where I had the freight of my life a massive jelly fish appearead in my face- yes i screamed like the biggest girl ever!! We then had lunch, and headed back to Airlie beach Lagoon as it was the end of our trip :( A very enjoyable a few days indeed, met of nice people who we are planning to cath up with further on in our travels. We were shattered but had to drag ourselves out for our after party in a bar in Airlie that evening, my stomach giving me grief and an early start the next day had a sensible night- Dettox time!!
A 9am depart for a 9hour bus journey to our next stop Mission Beach..joy!
