Well this part of OZ was included in my flight ticket! So I was going to come here whatever! and lets face it Ayres rock or Uluru is the sort of place you only come to once in your life! People back home were asking me "why bother its only a rock!?.." but I just had to see for myself!
Flying from the coast took about 2 and a half hours and even on that short trip the scenery changed dramtically from beaches and coastline to farmland and crops and then to absolutely nothing for miles and miles just a giant expanse of redness, it was like a scene from Mars! As soon as we were near the rock the Captain of the plane came on the tannoy and told us to look out our windows for our first glimpse! and I have to say it was pretty impressive, the land around Uluru (the Aboriginal name) is dead flat as far as the eye can see and in the middle of no -where is this enourmous rock!
Having flown from Melbourne where the temperature was a freaky 43c in the shade, I was expecting pretty much the same form the desert, in fact people told me it would be hot! but I genuinlly never realisee the effect the lack of humidity combined with the heat would have - it was boiling! Pretty much on arrival we had the fear of god put into us! were told that we had to carry water with us constantly and the effects of dehydration could have upon us, according to our guide heart weren't all that rare!!! disturbed as I was I got his point!
As soon as I arrived I got myself booked on a sunset tour of the rock. no time to waste!!Here we drove up to the rock and had a walk round. Uluru is an Aboriginal sacrid site and theby have been worshipping it for over 40,000 years, despite this there are still 45,000 people that climb to the top of it each year even though it is frowned upon by the Aboriginals, an analary is that its about as friendly as stamping accross peoples graves! nice! Watching the sunset over the rock witha glass of bubbly was amazing and well worth the trip out here already! It IS true about what they say that it changes colour, its actually quite dramatic, especially against the blue cloudless sky.
The next day I booked myself in for a sunrise walk around the base of the rock, over 12 kilometres, needless to say we had to get up early, my alarm was set for 4.30am!!!
By the way, anyone know why there is a HALF hours time difference here and not a full hour?
