Hello...wow I've updated this thing two days in a row, don't get used to it :-) The photo is actually of Kuala Lumpur, but as I haven't worked out how to upload photos here yet, it will have to do. I promise to get on that as soon as I get to Australia and can force a male to help me!
Ok so from Thailand we crossed the border into Malaysia, and then took a v quick ferry to a tiny island off the coast called Penang. Malaysia is so different to Thailand, it's such a mix of cultures. There are some buddhists and so a few temples but people are mainly Muslim which means more conservative dress. It's also Ramadhan at the moment so most of the country is celebrating that. The people are a mix of Indian/ Muslim/ Hindu/ Chinese/ Buddhists/ Christian and some original Malaysians. As it used to be an important British colony there is much more of a western feel to some parts and more people speak English which is nice.
Our hotel was decent enough, in Chinatown but right next to a mosque which means calls to prayer blasting through our bedroom window at all hours of the day and night! Very beautiful view from the hotel window though which is pretty cool.
Ate at a place which claims to do the best tandoori in the world...and I think they may actually be right. For about a pound I had a massive tray of chicken rice naan and daal, yum yum yum.
Got hammered in an English style pub and then danced the night away to a fab asian band in a club called Slippery Senoritas! Less prostitutes in Thailand but still a fair few, makes the boys attempts at pulling v funny. Their chat up lines are now firstly are you a prostitute and secondly are you a ladyboy! Not v popular with the Thai/malaysian girls but they aren't doing too badly.
I managed to get flashed by a prostitute on the way home! She/he pulled up her top and wiggled her boobs at me! Had I been more drunk I may have returned the gesture, so it's prob a good thing I was just in shock for the rest of the walk home. It's amusing when you can't tell the difference between males and females anymore, the ladyboys really are amazing and even the normal men look v feminine.
Penang is ok, but we don't really have too long and its still the rainy season. Also because they are burning rainforest in Indonesia there is a layer of smog over Malaysia at the moment most of the time. We decided to soothe our hangovers by visiting a really posh hotel called the Park Royal Hotel with a lush pool and on the beach etc. I think it must have been 5* coz it was gorgeous (we're planning our honeymoons again!) It chucked it down on us (again) and the roads started flooding, so the drive home was quite funny with motorbikes etc floating down the road! Had another tandoori as I'm obsessed and then tried to get some sleep in between prayer calls as we leave tomorrow for the Cameron Highlands.
Caught the public bus to the Cameron Highlands, which is randomly quite similar to the Lake District! Still haven't got used to eating curry for breakfast, so I have expanded my obsession from tandoori and werthers originals to include Hob nobs. We love 7/11 here.
In the afternoon did a tour which took us to the tea plantations. Won't bother with details except to say there is tea as far as the eye can see! Had a lovely cuppa and a chocolate cake, and felt very english lol. Then we went to a butterfly farm which was strangely lacking in butterflies but had loads of animals they have caught up here, like guinea pigs (?) snakes, massive insects, tarantulas and scorpions. The guide annoyed chucked a few scorpions around while assuring us their sting was like a bee's....everyone started edging gradually away. Also saw roses and strawberries. Had dinner at a crap restaurant, for some reason our guide seems to like doing this to us, and then an early night as there is nothing in the Cameron Highlands...even the Irish couldn't find a bar which is saying something!
