2nd day in Prague, Bohemia and we decide to explore the Prague-castle complex that hovers over the city. After we shuffle back and forth in the metro because signage regarding best access for the castle is conflicting, we purchase our two day pass and explore the St Vitus and St George Cathedrals, the Powder and Dalibor towers, the Picture gallery, the royal palace and the 'Golden Lane', an actual village street that remains virtually intact except for the invasion of souvenir shops, that incidentally, seem to pervade every nook and cranny of Prague (probably worst than the tackiest elements of Rome). This exploration consumes most of the day and to tell the truth, except for the golden lane, is a let down, perhaps because of other 'castle' experiences experienced that have been far more jaw-dropping.
3rd day in Prague and we begin by taking the metro to a stop near the Saturday morning flea market which, in contrast to google indicators, is completely food produce based.
We subsequently make our way up to the Vysehrad Gardens and explore this peaceful area for a few hours before taking the metro again to Wenceles Square, where we witness an anti-government protest rally comprising around 20000 people whist eating a Czech sausage with mustard. The protest winds up with a Czech version of the Rolling Stones 'Satisfaction (can't get no)'. We then walk back to the main square in Stare Mesto (old town) which is packed to capacity and watch the Astronomical clock in its full glory on the hour.
We adore the clock tower built by the clock maker Hanus in 1490, which shows three different kinds of time: old bohemian time, Babylonian and time as we know it. It also shows the movement of the sun and the moon through the twelve signs of the zodiac and on the hour, mechanical figures perform above the zodiac in the lower section of the clock.
We also explore the church of St Nicholas and other spectacular buildings. Another highlight was watching the performance of a young band wearing traditional attire playing a fusion of heavy metal and traditional music. However, after listening to four similar, bagpipe heavy songs, we decline the offer to purchase their C.D. Despite the crowds and 'touristy' feel, Prague is unbelievably beautiful and a must see travel destination.
We walk back through the crowd to our pension for some much needed relaxation and rest. Tomorrow, we plan to travel 70 km into the Bohemian countryside to visit Kutna Hora, in particular, the Church of Bones, a destination inspired by Jesse.
