I was on Skype with mum the other day and I was lamenting the fact that Loretta and I would be spending the 7th Nov, our anniversary on the train (7 hours) from Luzern to Salzburg, Austria. We are 30 mins from Salzburg and I am feeling that today is one of the most exhilarating days of my life. Yesterday, I thought it couldn't get better than Luzern, but our train journey leg from Zurich to Salzburg through the Alps is so incessantly mind-blowing that I have to repeatedly remind myself to breathe. God, in whatever form God is truly manifest, is based in these Alps.
I cannot find words to describe the awe I experience looking out the window at these enormous snow covered mountains and the villages at their base that must be spiritualised by their presence. We celebrate an anniversary meal on the train and it is fantastic and incredibly cheap in comparison to 'money must grow on trees' Switzerland. Complemented by a very generous sampling of Viennese red, we are subsequently compelled to sleep. I try, but every time I open my eyes, I am gobsmacked by what I am seeing and feel that I have to keep my eyes open to optimise beauty I may never see again.
We arrive in Salzburg and bus it to our hotel, which is really lovely and right in the heart of a pedestrian only historical area. We walk the area at night and are captivated by the beauty of this area of the city. We cannot wait to explore it by day tomorrow.
