Hi all,
Well we are on our final leg of Asia with lots of travelling involved, but plenty to see and lots to do which should all make it worthwhile! Next stop Kuala Lumpur:
So we flew into Kuala Lumpur on the 21st and caught a bus into the city. The place is huge with lots of high risers, not really the ideal place Lauren and I like. When we arrived at our place I can only say that it was horrendous...a small room with no window, right next to a communal lounge where a TV constantly blared out crappy Asian soaps at full volume. I asked to see another room and was shown what can only be described as a drug den so I siftly told the guy we were not staying there and walked to another place round the corner. Again this place wasn't that nice but compared to what we had just seen, it was the Ritz!
Anyway, got out into the city and I have to say it is a strange boiling pot of races, religions and cultures. The place itself was very developed with many western brands and chain strores (Nandos made a welcome change from all the rice and noodles!), and it felt quite dirty and smoggy much like any city I guess. The highlight of the city though has to be the Petronas Towers, these things are massive and have a spectacular lighting at night! On our first night there we thought we would try and catch a movie and were told the cinemas in the towers were the best. Caught a tube (very nice, look fairly new!) and arrived at the site. Climbing up the stairs out of the underground you are greeted with these huge, spot-lit twin towers looming above you. Well, we went inside and there is a huge mall with lots of shops and a cinema, we saw the Bourne Ultimatum which was good although the Air-con felt like a meat freezer! The strangest thing was when we left and were guided out of the doors into a completely empty shopping mall which was very, very surreal, like something out of a zombie movie where it is all silent and suddenly they burst out from everywhere...anyway random thought! So finally found our way out and after taking some more pics of the towers made our way home for a restless nights sleep.
Woke the next day to a massive storm and a drowned KL. Made our way to the bus station to book our return bus to the airport for our flight to Borneo. However, found out that there were no buses early enough for us to get to the airport on time and therefore the only option was to catch the last bus that evening and sleep at the airport! So that evening arrived and like a couple of homeless people, laid out our mummy sheets and tried to catch some sleep. Would have got more if it hadn't been for the ice cold floor (oh yeah there were no chairs in the terminal...at all!). Checked in at 5.15am and boarded the plane to Sandakan, Borneo (or Sabah as it is now called).
In all we didn't really like Kuala Lumpur and are glad we are there for literally a couple of hours on our way to Singapore after Borneo. It was a god experience however, and I am glad we got to see the Petronas Towers (we have a great photo which will be up soon!). Anyway, the part we have been waiting for is next...Borneo / Sabah and the Orangutans, Turtle Island and climbing Mount Kinabalu. Will update you all once we are back from Sabah, until then keep writing the messages and checking for new photos!
Take care, speak soon x
