Well I haven't updated the blog yet, as the tablet computer I bought to do it has stopped working, and its a bit far to post it back to Amazon from here. So I'm trying to do this first update from Matt's phone while he is off fishing.
We arrived at Cancun Airport after the longest flight I have ever been on (enough to watch two films and loads of tv episodes!) When we got to the airport we tried to work out where to get a taxi from and ended up getting one from a stand just outside the airport, which we later realised had totally ripped us off with the price, but you live and learn! Just so you get an idea, a private taxi cost about £17 but if you get a collectivo (public bus) it costs less than £1 to go the same distance. Luckily we found this out the next day so our travel costs are pretty low, with some journeys only costing 24p!
After sleeping off the flight, we decided to go to CrocoCun Zoo to look at some animals and do something a bit touristy. As it is low season for tourists, we got a private tour of the zoo with a guide, who took loads of photos of us feeding and stroking the animals, and we even held baby crocodiles! We also got to feed the wild spider monkeys who come into the zoo for an afternoon snack!
The next day we changed hotels and went to stay in the hotel zone so we were closer to town. The Sotavento Hotel & Yacht Club was really nice and backed onto a marina, breakfast was served in a thatched hut overlooking the water - so nice! After dinner, we went to Señor Frogs which is a famous cocktail chain over here. When our drinks arrived we were both a bit shocked as mine was glowing green and Matt's 'palm tree' glass was a little too penis-like!! We stayed in there for a bit, and were forced to play a game where we had to drink lemon liquor that the staff poured into your mouth straight from the bottle while everyone chanted. It all started to get a bit Butlins after that so we made a quick getaway, but not before I forced Matt into buying a tacky souvenir photo in an even tackier frame!
After Señor Frogs, we thought we'd better do something a bit more cultural, so the next day we went to El Rey Archaeological ruins. Now, there are iguanas EVERYWHERE in Cancun, they are just like pigeons on the street, but El Rey is supposed to have one of the most concentrated populations. After paying only £2 to get in, we were amazed by just how many wild iguanas there were, they really were everywhere, just sunbathing on the rocks and lounging in the sun. It was well worth the trip, and Matt got to see his first, of probably many, Mayan sites. After this we checked out of our hotel and started to make our way to Playa del Carmen (our next destination).
Overall Cancun was a nice introduction to Mexico, but it is really built-up and it's really hard to get public access to the beach as the seafront is mainly blocked off for private access for the larger hotels and resorts. On the plus side, we got to see the famous places in Cancun and a lot of iguanas. But we were keen to see what our next destination, Playa del Carmen has to offer.
